DBQ- minorities in world war II Essay

The following question requires you to write a coherent essay incorporating your interpretation of the documents and your knowledge of the period specified in the question. To earn a high score you are required to cite key pieces of evidence from the documents and draw on your knowledge of the period. It is often claimed that the major American wars of the last 150 years have resulted in the most important social and political gains of minorities and women. Evaluate this statement with regard to the experience of minorities and women during World War II. Use evidence from the documents and your knowledge of the period from 1941 to 1945 to compose your answer. Brigadier General B. 0. Davis to General Peterson, 9 November 1943 (Brigadier Davis had just completed an inspection of military bases in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Michigan): â€Å"I was deeply impressed with the high morale and attitudes of the colored officers and soldiers stationed in the states visited in the past two months. They were so different from those of the colored officers and soldiers located in the Southern states. While there has been an improvement in general conditions, there is still great dissatisfaction and discouragement on the part of the colored people and the soldiers. They feel that, regardless of how much they strive to meet War Department requirements, there is no change in the attitude of the War Department. The colored officers and soldiers feel that they are denied the protection and rewards that ordinarily result from good behavior and proper performance of duty†¦.. The Press news items and reports of investigations show that there has been little change in the attitudes of civilian communities in Southern states. The colored man in uniform receives nothing but hostility from community officials†¦. The colored m an in uniform is expected by the War  Department to develop a high morale in a community that offers him nothing but humiliation and mistreatment. Military training does not develop a spirit of cheerful acceptance of Jim-Crow laws and customs. The War Department has failed to secure to the colored soldier protection against violence on the part of civilian police and to secure justice in the courts in communities near-by to Southern stations. In the areas recently inspected, the colored soldier feels that he can secure justice in the civil courts. He has not been set upon by the civilian police. He has not been denied the privilege of occupying empty seats in public buses, street cars, etc. taxicabs to serve him. This is not so in Southern communities†¦.† President Roosevelt, â€Å"Executive Order 9066,† February 25, 1942: â€Å"Whereas the successful prosecution of the war requires every possible protection against espionage and against sabotage to national-defense material, national-defense premises, and national defense utilities. I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of War, and the Military Commanders whom he may from time to time designate, whenever he or any designated commander deems such action necessary or desirable, to prescribe military areas in such places and of such extent as he or the appropriate Military Commander may determine, from which any or all persons may be excluded, and with respect to which, the right of any person to enter, remain in, or leave shall be subject to whatever restrictions the Secretary of War or the appropriate Military Commander may impose in his discretion†¦.† Korematsu v. United States, 1944. Mr. Justice Murphy, dissenting: â€Å"This exclusion of `all persons of Japanese ancestry, both alien and non-alien,’ from the Pacific Coast area on a plea of military necessity in  the absence of martial law ought not to be approved. Such exclusion goes over `the very brink of constitutional power’ and falls into the ugly abyss of racism. Individuals must not be left impoverished of their constitutional rights on a plea of military necessity that has neither substance nor support. Being an obvious racial discrimination, the order deprives all those within its scope of the equal protection of the laws as guaranteed by the Fifth Amendment. It further deprives these individuals of their constitutional rights to live and work where they will, to establish a home where they choose and to move about freely. In excommunicating them without benefit of hearings, this order also deprives them of all their constitutional rights to procedural due process. Yet no reasonable relation to an `immediate, imminent, and impending’ public danger is evident to support this racial restriction which is one of the most sweeping and complete deprivations of constitutional rights in the history of this nation in the absence of martial law†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Congressman Rankin, Mississippi, February 18, 1942: â€Å"I know the Hawaiian Islands. I know the Pacific coast where these Japanese reside. Even though they may be the third or fourth generation of Japanese, we cannot trust them. I know that those areas are teeming with Japanese spies and fifth columnists. Once a Jap always a Jap.You cannot change him. You cannot make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear†¦. Do not forget that once a Japanese always a Japanese. I say it is of vital importance that we getrid of every Japanese whether in Hawaii or on the mainland. They violate every sacred promise, every canon of honor and decency. This was evidenced in their diplomacy and in their bombing of Hawaii. These Japs who had been there for generations were making signs, if you please, guiding the Japanese planes to the objects of their inequity in  order that they might destroy our naval vessels, murder our soldiers and sailors, and blow to pieces the helpless women and children of Hawaii. Damn them! Let us get rid of them now!† Franklin D. Roosevelt, â€Å"Fireside Chat on the Home Front,† October 12, 1942: â€Å"In order to keep stepping up our production, we have had to add millions of workers to the total labor force of the Nation. And as new factories come into operation, we must find additional millions of workers. This presents a formidable problem in the mobilization of manpower. It is not that we do not have enough people in this country to do the job. The problem is to have the right numbers of people in the right place at the right time†¦. In some communities, employers dislike to employ women. In others they are reluctant to hire Negroes. In still others, older men are not wanted. We can no longer afford to indulge such prejudices or practices.† â€Å"Women are welders [sic] discuss the production of motor mounts and welded parts in a welding booth at the Inglewood, Calif., plant of North American Aviation, Inc.† 1942. National Archives and Records Administration. President Roosevelt, Executive Order 8802, June 25, 1941: â€Å"WHEREAS it is the policy of the United States to encourage full participation in the national defense program by all citizens of the United States, regardless of race, creed, color, or national origin, in the firm belief that the democratic way of life within the Nation can be defended successfully only with the help and support of all groups within its borders; WHEREAS there is evidence that available and needed workers have been barred from employment in industries engaged in defense production solely because of considerations of race, creed, color, or national origin, to the detriment of workers’ morale and of national unity; NOW, THEREFORE, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the statutes, and as a prerequisite to the successful conduct of our national defense production effort, I do hereby reaffirm the policy of the United States that there shall be no discrimination in the employment of workers in defense industries or government because of race, creed, color, or national origin, and I do hereby declare that it is the duty of employers and of labor organizations, in furtherance of said policy and of this order, to provide for the full and equitable participation of all workers in defense industries, without discrimination because of race, creed, color, or national origin; †¦

Book Review, Summer of My German Soldier

Book Review, Summer of My German Soldier by Bette Greene The book, Summer of My German Soldier, is an example of historical fiction, set in Arkansas, America during World War 2. It tells the story of 12 year old Patty, a Jewish girl, who shelters a young German soldier who escapes from the camp for German prisoners in her hometown. The story opens with the arrival of the German prisoners of war at the train station. From the first chapters we find out about the daily routine of Patty and her family. The reader learns important information about the setting and the characters which explains their behaviour throughout the novel. We learn of the lack of warmth and love from Patty’s parents and also of the contrasting loving relationships with Ruth, her nanny, and her grandparents. In addition, we see evidence of the father’s brutality when he beats her savagely because she breaks a window. Her isolation, feelings of failure and of not being good enough for her parents are a lso shown. These chapters also highlight the racism, discrimination and prejudices in the community which make people feel like outcasts. Related article: Mother of a Traitor SummaryThe people in the community are also quite frightened by what the German prisoners might do to them. In chapter 3, Patty meets Anton for the first time when the POWs come into Patty’s father shop to buy hats. Her feelings for him develop from this moment. In chapter 7, the build-up to the climax begins when Anton escapes from his prison camp and Patty decides to shelter him in her hide-out. In the following chapters we learn more about Anton’s life with his English mother and German father. He comes from Gottingen in German and he used to study history at university. A few chapters later, Anton has to leave Patty because he is being hunted by the FBI. Before leaving, he gives her a 24 carat gold ring, his most valuable possession. In chapter 14, there is a change of setting, Patty goes back to school, and her adventure with Anton is finished. Patty’s need for attention eventually lands her in trouble when she talks about the ring. Her father doubts her story about being given it by an old man whom she helped and he beats her in the middle of the store. An FBI agent questions Patty about the old man and the ring and shows her a photo of Anton. Patty denies knowing the person in the photo but unfortunately for her, the FBI agent has the shirt that she had given to her father for Father’s Day, and then given to Anton. Patty is horrified and grief stricken when she sees the bloodstained shirt and learns that Anton has been shot and killed. Unable to deny the facts, Patty is considered a traitor by her family and community and becomes even more of an outcast.I think that the moral of this story is to not judge people by their colour, religion or nationality but to consider each person as an individual. If Patty was not Jewish, people would have been less harsh in their judgement. Had people judged Anton by his character, instead of his nationality, they would have realised that he was no different to any young man growing up in America at that time. Overall, I enjoyed reading this novel, it was interesting and a bit unusual to read a WW2 novel set in America. I found the characters realistic and not stereotypical, particularly Anton and Patty. As a teenager, I can identify with Patty’s character and I would have acted in the same way as her. The reader sees Patty develop from a timid, unloved child into a confident and strong individual. Although I enjoyed the novel, I found some weaknesses. There is very little action in the first six chapters, they are mostly concerned with setting the scene and giving background information. In addition I would have liked more details about Anton after he left Patty, it would have made the story more exciting. I would recommend this book to teenagers and young adults.

Rite of Passage Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Rite of Passage - Essay Example Ceremonies are very important during rites of passage as they help in the preparing an individual on how to adjust to different changes in their life. Besides the rites of passage being marked by the four stages of human life, it also takes the form of professional progress in life. This is indicated by graduation ceremonies that mark the end of educational progress in order to get into the job market. During the rites of passage, marriage is one of human life stages that mark a remarkable change in human life. This is because it involves making a choice of getting into a family commitment. Many societies across the globe celebrate marriage ceremonies. One of the societies that adore marriage is the Hinduism. This is depicted by the harmonious ceremonies they perform. Hindu marriage is understood as a rite of passage in which separation from the previous stage is marked by transition. The ceremony is accompanied by rituals in which integration into new roles of the social world is ma rked symbolically by a ring. Hindu marriage Hindus believe that life is sacred thus every step of their life from childhood to adulthood is marked by traditional ceremonies. Their ceremonies performed during the rites of passage are called the samskara. This marks ending point of one stage of life to the other. ... Samskara ceremony is mostly performed in the church where the couples and the people attending the ceremony surround the Homa fire. In the occasion, the couples are allowed to make a lifetime vows. In addition, they also make seven steps before God in order to be consecrated as a holy union (Das 5). Turner's model of the ritual process Turner was an anthropologist who noted that virtually every society in the world uses ceremonies to mark the transition in social status of people. The rites of passage are meant to validate chances in the individual status. This helps in the transformation of events that ranges from birth, adolescence, parenthood and finally death. He discovered that rites of passage from different societies across the world share similar characteristics. He considers a rite of passage as an activity symbolizing the crossing from old threshold of life into a new social world. Van Gennep, on the other hand, observed the rite of passage as a change in the social positio n which increases with an individual’s age. He identifies that every rite of passage is marked by separation, transition and reintegration (Das 5). Separation is the phase that is identified by symbolic behaviors of people in the society. It indicates how people detach themselves from their earlier fixed state of social structure or cultural diversity. Liminality, on the other hand, is characterized by the ambiguity of the ritual subject in the society. Individuals pass through a culture that has no attribute to the past and the future generation. In addition, reaggregation is the rite of passage that is consummated. In this phase,

Explain the role and significance of sponsorship in marketing an event Essay

Explain the role and significance of sponsorship in marketing an event and identify the positive and negative impacts associated - Essay Example The events provide the company with an opportunity of face-to-face interaction with the target customers who have grown and have become significant contributor towards the marketing communication program. Research studies have shown that about 22 percent of the total marketing budget is dedicated towards the sponsorship of events and activities (O'Connor, 2004). Sponsorship is defined as â€Å"the alignment of a brand with an activity in order to exploit the commercial potential created by the association, thereby positively impacting the brand image and/or sales amongst the sponsor’s target market, in order to attain marketing and corporate objectives† (Koekemoer, 2004, p. 456). In simple terms sponsorship can be defined as the provision of resources like equipment, people and money by an organization who acts as the sponsor, to the sponsoree or the beneficiary. As compared to the traditional advertising sponsorship acts as an alternative that provides opportunity for selling the product and services of the marketer and building brand image for the organizations. Sponsorship is a very powerful marketing tool. It has the capability to cut through the clutter, provide a unique opportunity to create relationship with the customers by producing emotional bondage with them and speak something rare as far as the business is concerned. This study focuses on gaining an in-depth knowledge regarding the role and importance of sponsorship and the negative and positive impacts it creates. Roles of Sponsorship The role that sponsorship plays can be understood from the objectives that the companies look for achieving through sponsorship. The success of sponsoring an event by the company is well defined by the objectives, evaluation of the end results and benefits that the organization enjoys. As per Andreff & Szymanski (2006), there are two types of objectives that can be classified as indirect and direct objectives. A dramatic change in the behavior of the ex isting and the new customers due to sponsorship is signified as direct objective. On the other hand indirect objective is signified by the increased visibility of the product and the brand, enhancement in the brand image and contact with the target segment. By accomplishing the indirect objectives the organization look for attaining growth in sales as the long term goal of the organization. Five significant principles of sponsorship objectives have been proposed by Jobber (2007). The objectives include gaining publicity, creating opportunities for entertainment, nurturing favorable company and brand association, enhancing the community relations and generating opportunities for promotion. Sponsorship provides an effective way to the organizations to promote their products, logos and brands; thus, providing opportunities for promotion. The company can use products like pens, sweatshirts and bags with their logos on them to create a wider recognition and retention among the audiences. Social responsibility is another reason that drives the company towards going for sponsorship. Companies engaged in sponsoring schools can create a socially responsible and caring image of the organizatio

Questions for Consideration (7-8) Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Questions for Consideration (7-8) - Assignment Example Since there is a similarity in the business operations irrespective of whether it is a small business or a large organization, then there should be no differential accounting. Furthermore, the introduction of differential account would lead to the formation of new accounting standard boards that would come up with the rules and regulations. This would require educating the auditors, financial analysts and accountants all over again. This would cost organizations a great deal of cash. Furthermore, there would be inconsistencies in financial records in case of dealings between the small companies and the large corporations. It would also not be cost effective for a private company that wants to go public since they would require changing a whole accounting system. In my opinion, the principles-based approach of coming up with accounting standards is better as compared to the rules-based approach. This is because the approach is not new to the U.S standard settings. Moreover, the approach has been in use for over 20 years thus financial departments of organizations are conversant with its framework. In addition, the principle-based method is detailed and precise for use. The approach also allows the developing of accounting from the conceptual framework ensuring a broad application and avoiding exceptions (Alexander and Britton 219). If the principle-based approach is universally adopted, there are several potential problems that may be experienced in the future. The increasingly detailed rules in the approach of the method would lead to accountants concentrating more on the required form rather than the substance of transactions. Furthermore, the required complex details of the method may lead to accountants structuring their business’s reports around the rules. This would lead to undesired accounting results (Alexander and Britton

Stat Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Stat - Essay Example This is mainly due to obesity, which results in Type 2 Diabetes, as we will see ahead. The reason I have decided to research on this topic was because Diabetes has become a global problem and it develops various complications in patients with time. According to a report there are about 2.9 million patients suffering from Diabetes and if a similar trend follows, it might hit 5 million by 2050. (Diabetes UK 2012) I have used the Internet as the main source of my research. I have taken statistical data from various sites that illustrate how Diabetes is persistently rising at an alarming rate all across the globe. I have then added a graph to show that how controlling this situation could make a difference in the future of the patients. I have assured to use credible sources to make my research accurate. Also, it is related to statistical data about a medicine related subject and I have taken the data from online reports of the Diabetes organizations. The figures they have are directly taken from the hospitals and doctors records. Therefore, I am sure that all the information is genuine. The graph above shows that rate at which Diabetes is rising four times the increase in rate of all the different types of Cancers combined. Between 2006 and 2007, Diabetes was rising at around 3.8 percent and this rate increased to 5.4 during 2009 and 2010; whereas, the rate of increase in Cancer was 0.9 percent and rose to about 1.3 percent as shown above. We can clearly compute that the difference in rise in rate for Diabetes was 1.6 (5.4-3.8) while for Cancer the rate was 0.4 (1.3-0.9), which is four times higher. Therefore, the slope of the chart for Diabetes is four times steeper than the slope for all the Cancers combined. The charts above show the increase in the number of people with Diabetes in 2000 compared to the estimates predicted for 2030. It is visible that in

Only those who are authorized may be able to use the internet but only for official business reasons. 2. Software that is needed to support your job must be analyzed and accepted by a supervisor and installed by the IT department. 3. Use of internet can provide security breaches and other harmful effects to your company’s system. Thus only authorized personal should be able to use the internet. 4. E-mail also applies to this. It can only be used for reasons that involve the company’s intention. Any viewing of pornography or sending of pornographic messages will be logged and taken against the offender. Any discrimination found in e-mails will also be logged and can be grounds for termination. 5. Any information stored or sent from company’s devices are property of the company. No information created or stored in the workplace should be considered private. Your computer and information can be confiscated at any time. I agree with these terms because this equipment is company owned. The company has every right to know what is going on with its employers and how its devices are being used. Secondly, work is work. There is time for one to play games but not during work hours and especially not with work property. Information and Hard Discs 1. First the information must be located on a disk. The wares that determine which part of the disk to read can be the application, operating system, system BIOS and a specialized driver softwa re for the disk. 2. One or more translations steps are needed make a final request to the drive producing an address expressed in its geometry. The drive’s geometry typically consists of terms such as the cylinder, the head and sector of the drive that is supposed to be read. Through the disk drive interface, a request is sent to the drive giving the specified address and permission to retrieve the sector of interest. 3. The control program of the hard disk will begin by checking if the requested information is in the hard disk’s cache. If it is present then the program will supply the information on the spot. 4. Drives are usually spinning. If the power management has been modified to "spin down" to conserve energy, the drive's controller board will allow the spindle motor to â€Å"spin up† the drive so it can operate. 5. The controller board would continue reading and translate information .It would also consider the unique characteristics of the drive. The lo gic program of the hard disk would consider also the number of the cylinder. The cylinder then relays to the disk what track should be used on the disk’s surface. Then, the actuator finally reads/write the head to the right track. 6. As soon as the heads are in the right place, it starts reading the location. It prioritizes the sector that was requested to be read. The disk would

The natural light should not be forgotten in the architecture, and the words of Le Corbusier "Architecture is a smart, coordinated play of masses in the light," it should be the most important doctrine. Prayer Prayer is defined in so many ways and the various definitions that are given are normally associated with the experiences of those defining them. The first definition that we can talk of is prayer being a communication. Prayer is regarded as a means of communicating with God. Ordinarily, when people are communicating, it takes at least two people to communicate. When people are communicating, there is a message that is being sent to the receiver, the receiver is expected to encode the message and then give a feedback to the sender. When communicating with God, the s ame process is expected to take place. The person communicating with God, sends a message to God where by God is expected to receive the message and give a feedback. The feedback from God is normally regarded as fulfilled expectations of the person who is communicating with Him (Giles, 2004). The diagram below shows a priest and a church member communicating to God together. http://img.tfd.com/wn/30/605C7-prayer.png In connection with communication is the notion that prayer is talking to God. Communication involves talking to someone just like in prayer it is believed that we talk to God and hence a conversation with God. We normally hold a conversation with people who can hear us. In prayer, we therefore recognize the presence of God whom we talk

Change Through Transformational Leadership Practices Essay

Change Through Transformational Leadership Practices - Essay Example There is indeed a positive correlation between transformational leadership, organizational culture and the organizational climate. The organizational climate can be described as the environment and attitude within the workplace. A transformational leader knows that to implement any change, then it is important to understand the employee’s views on the company (Stringer, 2002). The organization culture includes the line of communication, problem solving skills, level of innovation and even leadership. The aforementioned factors can affect workers performance in the workplace and hence should be addressed severally. According to, Stringer (2002), looking into the organizational culture also enables a leader to assess the reaction that would be met by the employees of they were to embark on making any changes in the workplace. Therefore, by studying the organization climate, a leader is able to influence the employee mindset and encourage them to work towards meeting the organiza tional objectives. Organizational culture is the sum of activities that are inherent in a company and it can refer to the repetitive behaviors that describe the company. For transformation to occur, it is paramount that leaders understand the culture that seems to slow its progress (Denning, 2013). For instance, a leader may realize that time is wasted during the morning hours and this leaves some tasks unattended by evening.

Social Unrest in the Bahamas Essay Example for Free

Social Unrest in the Bahamas Essay The principal causes of working class unrest and increasing dissatisfaction were the same throughout the British Caribbean Region colonies: low wages; high unemployment and under-employment; arrogant racist attitudes of the colonial administrators and employers in their relations with black labourers; lack of adequate and proper, in most cases, any representation; and no established structure for the resolution of industrial disputes by collective bargaining. Furthermore the unfairness shown towards black labourers would later result too many complaints and little or no positive response. Black labourers continued to seek some kind of equality due to the fact that most of their work at the same performance level as those who were white. ? Political Struggles: The Bahamas, like many other countries that are apart of the Commonwealth, had representative assemblies based on the bicameral system of the mother country. Each colony had a governor who represented the monarch, an appointed upper house, and an elected lower house. The electoral franchise, however, was extremely restricted, being vested in a few wealthy male property holders. Colonial acquisition and administration were not neatly and easily accomplished. The Burma Road riot, however, was more than an isolated act of venting. Although a powerful symbol of black agency that has been referenced again and again in the political struggles of Bahamian blacks, the riot was more than a symbol. The riot also kindled the development of a pro-black consciousness in the country, a necessary precursor to black rule and independence. The majority black population in the Bahamas could literally dismantle the edifices of minority white rule, if sufficiently provoked. The fissure that was created in 1942 would widen over the next few decades and within a quarter of a century it became a gapping hole that the majority black Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) walked through to victory. ? ? High unemployment and under-employment: By the early nineteenth century, blacks constituted at least 80 percent of the population in the Bahamas. Majority falling in the unemployment or the under-employment category. Around this time whites were considered more qualified leaving most blacks with little work options. For example, middle class blacks had a better chance to receive a well paying job than any equally qualified ‘grass root’ Bahamians. ? Racism: Even after emancipation, Caribbean societies inherited a rigid racial stratification that was reinforced by the unequal distribution of wealth and power. The three-tier race structure, which existed well into the 1940s and in some societies beyond, upheld the belief of European racial superiority, although most West Indians are of African descent. Racial discrimination was prevalent throughout the Bahamas in the 1930s and the 1940s. Black Bahamians were treated as subhuman in this country. It appears as if the suffering of the black masses, which were mostly living in abject poverty. For example, in the general strike in 1958, white taxi drivers were granted license to transport tourist from the newly opened airport located on Windsor Field. This started began the ‘Quiet Revolution’ which was gave the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) a chance bring the issues of the nation in the presence of the House of Assembly. Low Wages: Black labourers were reluctant to work but were mostly given low wages. Blacks were paid less than white labourers which began uproar in most cases. The government was forced to impose martial law (where the police are given extra powers to arrest) and establish curfew fearing that the black labourers would take out their frustration on local whites. In relation to racism, foreign workers were paid 8 shillings per day versus shillings for local workers (Burma Road riot). Although many have suffered discrimination in many ways, this seems to be the most effective and injustice of them all. Bahamians were willing to work but they were unwilling to remain submissive to the white government or merchant class order. This was because of the difference of wages between black Bahamians and the merchant class order. The white government tried to negotiate the improvement of the wages, however, the Bahamians still suffered from the discrimination. Things such as owning a property was difficult because they never met the outstanding payment due to low wages. Foreign workers were paid more than black locals; overlooking the fact that the some black locals work harder to be paid that the small amount of money. In conclusion, during the nineteenth century, common causes of working class unrest were extremely obvious because of the many riots and the constant discrimination against blacks and whites. The inequality of each factor represented how Bahamians suffered to find a job that would offer them a respectable a wage and to muster their strength to create a political party that can proudly present the frustrations of the black Bahamians in the House of Assembly. Black Bahamians wanted to elevate black people to a position of racial equality and to promote democratic values for all Bahamians. Successfully the Bahamas looked forward to an outstanding future. The black majority party (PLP) won the government making Lynden Pindling the first black Premier of the Bahamas. Sir Milo Butler became the first Governor General of the Bahamas. The Bahamas has greatly improved since the 1930s and the 1940s. The country didn’t face anymore labor discrimination and most importantly racial tension. The Bahamas grew even more and hadn’t faced any more struggles and strife. The 1930s and the 1940s were forever engraved in the Bahamian history because it was a time that the Bahamas had to fight for what was theirs in pride and strength. 1. You are a member of the Taxi Cab Union during the General Strike of 1958. Give an account of your experience. In November 1957 the government had once again betrayed us by granted license to white taxi drivers to transport tourists from the newly opened airport at Windsor Field. As a black Taxi cab driver and a member of the Taxi Cab Union, it wasn’t an unfamiliar feeling to be discriminated public ally by the government. We were not going to tolerate this injustice act us Taxi Cab drivers. So we all came together and planned to use our Taxi cabs as blockade across the road leading to the airport. It seemed risky but it was worth it. The question â€Å"What was I thinking? † lingered in my mind for a couple of days but I had to do it for the sake of my family, my colleagues, my job, and my country. The strike officially began in January of 1958. We formed a blockade with our vehicles across the road lading to the airport exactly like we had planned. Many other workers came outside to support us as well. The leader of the Bahamas Federation of Labor and a known heroic figure, Randol Fawkes, called for all hotel workers, sanitation workers, government workers, teachers and public servants to strike, in order to force the government to address the labor issues of the country. The General Strike was to last sixteen (16) days. Bay Street owned tour companies were given the exclusive right to transport tourists to and from the hotels. Obviously, this move, if allowed to go unchallenged, would have destroyed the livelihoods of hundreds of black Bahamian independent taxi drivers. The General strike was a peaceful, non-violent revolution of the labor laws of this country. The strike had its intended outcome. New labor laws including the Trade Union and Industrial Conciliation Act were passed. A labor department was set up giving ordinary workers more rights. Discriminatory labor practices were also banned. The black majority got a right to vote. In 1959 all Bahamian men over were allowed to vote. In 1961 legislation was passed that allowed women over 21 to vote. As Bahamians we struggle to get what we want but it was a strong fight to what we deserved. Life had changed ever since then all because we didn’t tolerate the racial attitudes and unfairness of the white government.

Product line extension of coca cola

Product line extension of coca cola Coca-Cola Company had been with many of fights before it became which now is. Its years begun in 1886 in which a pharmacist of named Atlanta Juan Pemberton raised with a water of the drink, a cane sugar syrup, a caffeine, kola nut and cola leaves extracts. The drink that was found to be nutritious and restoration. Pemberton along with its accountant, frank Robinson sold it to the market. Robinson suggested the appointment of the Coca-Cola drink after his two ingredients and so he was. They called it delicious and that it recovered. Nevertheless, Pemberton died in 1888 with its gains that only ascended to $50. It sold to his company to Handle Candler, druggist to by greater of Atlanta for the cost of $2.300. In 1892, Candler and its brother, Juan, frank Robinson and his two colleagues established Coca-Cola Company. Further to do his drink known public, it passed $11,000 of 1892 for the posters of the drink, murals and distributed the aviators who can be seen in most of the markets. The company established his first plant of the drink in Dallas, Roofing tiles. The drink was then first in bottle by a bottling company in Vicksburg, Mississippi. A year later, was sold the country throughout. Two lawyers named to youngest child Thomas and Jose Whitehead from Chattanooga, Tennessee bought the rights of distribution of the syrup of the coke of the company in 1899. More ahead, both they divide due to the differences in time and to the money. Thomas had the rights for the Northeast coast and of the West whereas Whitehead supervised the territories of the Southeastern, the Southwest and the near west. The drink had its first curved contour of the bottle in 1915 based on the one form of the cocaine. Candler retired of its work and passed its rights to its children. He made mayor of Atlanta in 1916. Ernest Woodruff of Columbus, Georgia bought to company in 1919 worthy of $25 million. His son, Robert made the president of the company. Robert spent more time than he investigated on the commercialization the drink that the manufacture he. Two mottos were added under their term: The Pause that Refreshes and Its the Real Thing. Since then, Coca-Cola grew until it became which was known today. Product line Extension A line of products extension is the use of the mark of a product established for a new article in the same category of the product. The line extensions happens when a company introduces additional articles in the same category of the product under same mark as new flavors, forms, colors, the added, so large ingredients of the package. Marketing Plan for Product Line Extension of Coca Cola The company of the base of the company of Coca-Cola is to benefit and to recover each one that reaches. Founded on 1886, we are the main, selling manufacturer, and distributor of the world of the concentrated ones and the syrups without alcohol of the drink, that are used to produce almost 400 trade names of the drink which they compensate wide list. The corporative headquarters settle down in Atlanta, and we are celebrating local operations inside on 200 countries around the world. The activities cover all the sectors with the industry of drinks. It is the second main functional drink player and Asian of the specialty, whereas the number that aligns one in the value for ready-to-drinks the sector of the tea. The Bubble Buzz will be a drink in bottle and will be placed as the only one ready-to-drinks the product of the tea of the bubble available in the market. The drink will have a green base of the tea with the heightened flavors of the fruit (fruit, mills and passion lime) as well as per them of the tropical. It will bring an experience that drinks entirely only its consumers. One will appear like cowardly and unusual alternative to the traditional tea whereas it provides the great taste of the authentic juice of fruit in attractive and advisable packing. The strategic paper of the humming of the bubble for the Coca-Cola Company is centered on three objectives: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ In order to remain in the vanguard like the leader of market in innovating product introductions and guessed right product launchings; à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ In order to consolidate and to satisfy the necessities with the consumers more adventurers of the generation and with a new product eye-catching and functional; à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ In order to make the leader of market in the functional segment of drinks with the increasing quotas of market. Situation Analysis INDUSTRY ANALYSIS Consumption: The volume of sales for the functional segment of drinks in Canada it has reached $342.2 million in 2004 after a volume of 125.9 million liters. This segment of the product has demonstrated a constant growth from 1999: an increase of 13.5% during 6 years. The tariff of the consumption per capita in 2004 has reached 3.94 liters, that a compared increase 4.0% represents in 1999. The growth of this particular market is to a great extent due to a slow change in tendencies of the consumer. Trends: With early years 60, the nonalcoholic drinks were synonymous with the colas in the mind of consumers. In the years 80 and years 90, nevertheless, other drinks (of the water in bottle to the tea) got to be more popular. Coca-Cola and Pepsi responded extending their offerings with alliances (e.g. Coke and Nestea) and acquisitions (e.g. Coke and Minute Maid), but also being centered efforts in the diversification of the list. Today, whereas the value of the industry of the smooth drink has increased of 2004, the sales of volume of carbonic nonalcoholic drinks have declined due to a great proportion of the consumers who are deciding on the tendency towards healthier alternatives in the functional segment of the drink (the drinks, the smoothies, milk and the juice of the energy drinks, drunk of the sports) as well as the juice and the water in bottle. They have contracted the companies actively to new product progresses to contradict the preoccupations every greater time by negative impacts of the health of drinks of high degree of fruitful, but also to increase the demand in a market where the offerings of the product are being matured quickly. The new introductions of the flavor and the health-conscious formulations have been sent in an attempt to compensate the declination in carbonic sales of the smooth drink. One hopes that the functional market demonstrates maintained years of the interest of the growth and the consumer in the future whereas the consumption changes of position to products to trendier more, healthier and more falsified. Profitability future growth potential: In 1993, the producers of the concentrated one gained to 29% benefits before taxes in their sales, whereas the embotelladores gained benefits of 9% in their sales, for the beneficial total of the industry of 14%. Whereas the functional sector of drinks explains only 3.7% of the total sales of nonalcoholic drinks in 2004, the estimations are foretelling a growth of 7.3% in sales and 11.0% in the consumption of the volume before 2009. SWOT ANALYSIS Strengths Brand strength Coca-Cola Company is the greatest manufacturer, distributor and the salesman of the concentrated ones and syrups without alcohol of the drink in the world. The trade name of Coca-Cola is unarguably one of the reconocibles trade names of the 200 countries in where it sells his products. The strong mark is one of the base for the competitive advantage of the company in several of its markets of the base. Effective strides in new markets Coca-Cola has partnered with several companies (such as company at risk shared with Nestle) to increase the capacity to react to the demands and the changes in the markets of the tea, the coffee and the frozen juice. The markets that become are more complex than carbonic nonalcoholic drinks. Results of operations In 2004, the yields of network-operation added approximately $21.9 billion, an increase of 8% as of 2002. The gross benefit added $14.3 billion of 2004. The company heavy generated $5.968 million its activities of operation and reinvierte in its business. The capacity to generate liquidity flows significant is one of its dominant forces. Strong existing distribution channels Coca-Cola have operations everywhere and are established in their channels of distribution (such as retailers of the warehouse or machines of sale). Therefore, a new product launching can trust typically the existing system of the distribution to reach to most of its market of target whereas the delivery does not require any important progress of supply / delivery. Weaknesses Relying upon line extensions Extensions is to trust sales of the increase of the extensions of trade name in the specific lines, particularly its carbonic products of long term of the smooth drink (that is to say. the introduction of the coke of helped vanilla to maintain the sales for drinks of the tail of the base). Nevertheless, there is a strong risk to recover the usable pieces existing sales to the long term (for example, the tea of the bubble could dissuade in the sales for the frozen tea). Reliant upon particular carbonated drinks The presence of long term of the drink of the coke of Coca-Cola has established this particular line like product of the ship standard. Whereas the products of the coke of the base bring a solid base of sales and loyalty to the company, expectations of the consumers las also anchor more and more and single-they are aligned, clearing the freedom in the areas of the line diversification and the product modifications (taste, packed, price). Brand dilution The enormous amount of existing new product and trade names that were introduced by the company could diminish the value and forces distinguishing of each product that is being manufactured. Entrance into difficult non-core categories Coca-Cola Company is a truely global multinational giant of the business. Whereas some product categories are distributed in many areas of the globe (coke, Powerade, etc.), the geographic necessities require since these global trade names are adapted heavy to their region of the target. In addition, many lines of smaller and diversified products are more or less popular in a particular region on another one. Therefore, the process to diversify to the production and the commercialization each product implies expensive investments. These requirements of capital increase typically whereas the product focuses heavy (for example, since the trade name of Coca-Cola is world-wide highly reconocible, the commercialization a coke bottle in Japan would be less difficult that the commercialization to the bottle of Qoo in which he himself country Qoo that is a drink nongasified less well-known than was one of the newest introduction of the trade name of Coca-Cola in 1999). Saturation of carbonated soft drink segment Due to the countless number of the trade names available in the market, more and more gets to be difficult in the segment of nonalcoholic drinks to innovate and to create the new products that genuine are stopped towards outside their competition. And like we have seen, an analysis of the industry has demonstrated that the growth in the market of nonalcoholic drinks gets to be difficult and desafiador when the conditions and the tendencies of the consumer cause a demand of the market that remains suspended. Opportunities New product introductions The functional market of drinks are one that allows particularly more opportunities of the innovation and gives the greater freedom for the creativity in the design, production, manufacture, distribution, promotion and the options and the processes selling to by minor. Brand is attractive to global partners Due to the size of the company (value including, marks and the yields of operation) and the wide base of the list, Coca-Cola enjoys a spending power hard on its jets, and also e.g. attracts great societies with the several levels of the reach of the consumer ( Burger King, promotions of the study of the film, agreements of the sponsorship, etc.). The knowledge of existing trade name also provides a field that plays international for the long-range strategies of the commercialization. Threats Strong competition Coca-Cola is competing in a global market that is characterized by oligopoly between several (but little in numbers) competing. The fight for the quotas and the sales of market in tight markets becomes complex. Potential health issues The present tendency of the consumer and the consumers agrupan knowledge towards merchandise and the services are beneficial and threatening for the companies in the sector of nutritional products and drinks. On the last years, the excessive editions of the health of the preoccupations have risen in means with to have extended and the network every greater time of the knowledge makes leave (the newspapers, the TV channels, Internet and so on). The movement of the youngest generation towards one more a healthier call of the form of life for the planning and the careful decision making in new product progresses. The big companies can also make easily the white apprehension of consumes. Free trade In an era of globalization, the great international competitors can leave with the comparative advantages (the constant fight to continue being the first motor and leader of market in a long term phantom). The editions appear when taking care of the competition of the price and the economic development. The commercial organizations also take control in front of the public pressure that can interrupt operations in or more areas of the company. COMPETITION The superior competitors of Coca-Cola for the industry of nonalcoholic drinks are PepsiCo (31.6%) and Cadbury- Schweppes (15.8% of the market), that combined, represents near 48% of the total market. Coca-Cola is leading with 43.7% of the total market of nonalcoholic drinks. In the functional sector of drinks, PepsiCo is the leader of present market with 60.5% of the quotas of market in 2004. Coca-Cola Co is secondly with 32,8%. The Bubble Buzz will send in a unserved at the moment the subgroup of that market (RTD Ready-TO-Drink tea of the bubble), that until this moment unexisting. It is anticipated that the following trade names could potentially compete with Bubble Buzz in the functional market of drinks: Energetic, Lipton froze the tea, Sobe (had by PepsiCo), as well as Snapple and the hawaiano sacador (had by Cadbury/Schweppes). The Bubble Buzz also creates a potential situation for the cannibalism with Coca-Cola very has other functional drink and trade names of the frozen tea. The present tea becomes fragments of the bubble of the fortraditional of the market, since the distribution restricts to the local plugs and the points of sale such as accountants and small tea of the bubble make purchases in locations dispersed through Canada. Nevertheless, the direct competition of these local players is not anticipated, from the commercialization roll-towards outside it will accentuate initially in knowledge of the product and both channels of sales do not reach nor serve he himself market (that sells to by minor against accountant/the restoration). A strong system of the distribution exists or with Coca-Cola, since the societies and the channels are or in place. This will facilitate the reach of the product in its market of target. Barriers to entry: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Due to the number of competitors, it will be hard to prevent behavior with imitation (Specially of PepsiCo) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Risk of the competition with the private labels that emerge (e.g. Choice of president) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Given the ample range of the trade names (saturation in the market of the smooth drink), one becomes a challenge so that the humming of the bubble is stopped towards outside à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ To produce tea in bottle of the bubble requires the investments of important capitals for the specific necessities of the chain of the manufacture (of the ingredients to the specifications of packed final) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ The campaign of the commercialization to do this trade name not known popular requires more promotional expenses that an extension of traditional trade name. Target Market Segment identification: RTD (Ready-to-it drinks) bottled tea of the bubble, to be established within the functional sector of drinks. Segment needs: The product will supply to the necessities and social of the necessities of the calorie of bothphysiology ( hydrating and nutritional value) (opinion of a social drink, of the diversion with a sense to belong within groups of the consumer of the pair). Segment trends: The present tendencies include a change far from foods of the scrap iron and the drinks carbonated, an interest every greater time for beneficial healthier products/for the mind and body, the tendency towards the availability of in the products for those with a form of active life, as well as the tendency for the personalizacià ³n with the adjustment for particular requirements go (or for drinks, with variety-looking for in a wide introduction of flavors). Segment growth potential: The statistical information anticipate a growth of the segment of excessive the 1.72% 9 next years (2015) for the 10-29 years. Positioning strategy The only tea in bottle RTD of the bubble available. The cowardly bottle and eye-catching, the functional packed one, the experience that drink superior-appraised, fresh, new and unusual, unique, the aspects of the game (to per them of the tapioca, colored straw of great size), the variety of flavors, candy, recovering, for the hip and young people, a healthier alternative to the heavy-sugar drinks. Marketing Objectives The objectives of the plan of the commercialization are centered strategic around 3 criteria: in order to create a strong knowledge of the consumer towards a totally new product of the tea of the bubble of Coca-Cola, to establish a recognition of ample trade name with the capture of the quotas of market in the functional segment of drinks, and to make the leader of superior market in that particular segment within the foretold sales it calculates. Marketing Program Product Strategy The core :.The drink of the tea of the bubble in pre-having bottling, ready-to-drinks format. The Actual Product Packaging and labeling: Branding: colorful, the aspect of the game, formed, prominent standard round of the Bubble Buzz written in the modern source, catchphrases for example Thinks outside The bubble and Get Your Buzz. Trade name: Bubble Buzzà ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚ ¢, a Coca-Cola product Brand personality: cowardly, fresh, functional, original, amused, healthy energy, etc. Brand equity: Coca-Cola provides a reputation of the quality, constant, accessible innovator and of the smooth drink. Augmented product: Nutritional information, state (drunk social), characteristics that promote the Web site, subsidy by disease of a green base of the tea. Marketing considerations Product life cycle: The Bubble Buzz is a product under-that learns. With a strong campaign of the commercialization, the sales will to immediately begin and the advantages of the purchase are understood easily. Since the Bubble Buzz is prone imitation of the product, the strategy of Coca-Cola is to quickly widen the distribution that is at the moment feasible thanks to the high capacity of manufacture of the company. Product class: Food beverage- Soft Drinks- Functional Drinks Bubble Buzz follows the practice of product modification: Coca-Cola is introducing an existing drink (tea of the bubble) but redefines the drink with a new one, more advisable package. The tea of the bubble now will become a drink extensively available in the multiple that sells to by minor the channels (of the distribution). Price Strategy The strategy of the price that will be undertaken must consider the aspects following: 1. Demand of consumer 2. The service life of product 3. The demand of potential Customer demand Customer demand Client of the substitutes is a crucial factor that is lead by the taste, the rent and the availability of others the similar products in a diverse price (mentioned more ahead in the potential it replaces the section). For many of consumers, the value and the price highly are related: the higher the price, the higher the valueTherefore, the intention of Coca-Cola to place Bubble Buzz like unique, innovating and attractive product gives certain control him on price of the Bubble Buzz. To be able to put the appraisal in execution above nevertheless, the minimization of the nonmonetary costs to the clients must also be along with includes the knowledge of the product (remarkably announcing) and values (the advantages). The Product Lifecycle The company must also take to advantage the fact that newer it is the product and previous inside its service life upper the price can be generally. It assures a margin benefit of the overflow whereas adopters early buy the product and the company/signature tries to recover costs of the development quickly and also it brings certain prestige to the product. Potential substitutes Coca-Cola is forced by the monopolistic market in which he competes. The basic characteristics nevertheless are product differentiation. Promotion Strategy Objectives: In order to initiate strong knowledge on the launching of the bubble it makes fun of to transverse of consumers of the generation and (10-29 years) as well as its parents. In order to gain the quotas of market on our superior functional competitor of drinks, PepsiCo. Message: The promotional exits will transport the clear message that the Bubble Buzz is a healthy Drink for sporty and young people who simply enjoy taking care of their body and life. Concepts: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Think outside the bubble: BeBold, BeOriginal, BeDifferent, BeYourself. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ A good spirit in a good body. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ For the out-of-the-ordinary individuals who like to challenge themselves. Media selection: Before choosing the appropriate averages, it is important to observe that the consumers of the generation and give only the partial attention to means. Nevertheless, they can be reached with integrated programs. They are using typically average of more than a communication simultaneously; a behavior that often is called the works multiple. This group of consumers does not give his complete attention to a single message, but the continuous partial attention uses something to explore means. The salesmen can immovable communicate with the generation and using a variety of pointed promotional tools. Another tactics important to reach our market of target are with the viral commercialization or of the Buzz , that Coca-Cola will use heavy in this campaign (campus, competitions). Promotional Mix: Consumer oriented: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Competitions: Win another Bubble Buzz flavour, Uncover a secret code underneath the bottle cap and win sporting goods and electronics by logging on the website, Win a trip and tickets and hotel package for west indies . à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Samples: distributed in supermarkets, school/universities. Place (Distribution Strategy) The Bubble Buzz will be distributed through these channels: supermarkets, warehouses of convenience, independent warehouses of the food, multiple warehouses of discount, multiple grocers, direct machines of sale, sales. Contribution of Advertisement The strategy of the development of the trade name of Coca-Cola has been of great spread and has handled to remain in the calcium light since then felt well to a favorite with the drinkers without alcohol. One has noticed that the loyalty of trade name is an important factor in holding the position of number one. The article down suggests the several techniques of the building of the trade name of the company. Founded in 1886, the Coca-Cola Company enjoys the state of being one of the bigger companies without alcohol of the drink of the world. It has a system of the distribution that makes only of the rest of the manufacturers without alcohol of the drink. Over the years, Coca-Cola has passed several tests of the enhancement of the trade name and the company does a point to him that the products underneath the Coca-Cola of the flag continue invading the minds of the consumers. The strategy of the development of the trade name of Coca-Cola included the readjustment of its policies and techniques of development of the trade name to continue with mindset that it changed of his consumers. Previous, this trade name believed in the following one: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Produce the capacity à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Availability à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ The acceptability Nevertheless, this strategy of the development of the trade name of Coca-Cola was re worked to tension in the following one instead of another one: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Value of the price à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Preference à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Penetrating Penetration. The essence of the building of the trade name of the company lies in the fact that it wanted that the accessibility of its consumer was within the reach of an arm of desire. In an attempt test to be constructed its identity of the trade name, so much as 20 qualities of trade name each participation of the month so much as 4000 clients. The strategy of the development of the trade name of Coca-Cola is effective since it has been able to construct, handles as well as it maintains his image of trade name from yesteryears. Learning Outcomes When establishing is rebirthed marketing plan every aspect of the marketing plan must be critically examined and thoroughly researched. This consists of examining of study of markets, reviewing of the business and the present situation (situation analysis) and carefully scrutinising of the industry and the possibilities of the smooth drink of Coca-Cola in the market. Developing the Marketing Mix The mixture of the commercialization is probably the most crucial stage of the process of the planning of the commercialization. In the commercialization, the product also refers services, such as holidays or a film, where you enjoy the advantages without having the result of the service. The businesses must think of products about three diverse levels that are the product of the base, the real product and the increased product. The product of the base is what it is buying the consumer really and the advantages he gives. The clients of Coca-Cola are buying an ample nonalcoholic drink range. The real product is the pieces and the characteristics that give the product of the base. The consumers will buy the product of the coke due to the greater levels and the high quality of products of Coca-Cola. The increased product is the additional advantages and services of the consumer provided the clients. Since the nonalcoholic drinks are good consumable, the increased level very is limited. But Coca-Cola offers a line of the aid and a telephone service of the complaint for the clients who are not satisfied with the pr

Gothic Fiction Essay -- Literary Analysis, Jane Eyre

Introduction Since the 18th century, Gothic Fiction has become a famous genre. As its popularity has increased during the decades it is still a well-known and much appreciated theme nowadays. Whereas many female authors were restricted to feminist novels and had the reputation of being unable to compose works valuable for everyone, the onset of Gothic writing bore a whole new prospect for them (Heiland 1-8). A famous example for such female authors is Charlotte Brontà «. When she wrote Jane Eyre in 1847 she enqueued herself to the list of successful women of that genre. Even though Jane Eyre contains several aspects of the classic Gothic novel it differs in the font of the uncanny. Whilst novels such as Frankenstein, The Picture of Dorian Gray or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde allude to a supernatural matter and maintain surreal, Jane Eyre originates from an earthly reason. In this paper a brief definition shall be given of what Gothic Fiction is. The main part will deal with the Gothic elements within Jane Eyre in chronological order. In a final step special attention will be given to the uncanny as it is found during several incidents within Thornfield Hall and why it is different from the classic Gothic. This will be done with special attention to the character of Bertha Mason – the protagonist when it comes to the Gothic aspect of the novel. Gothic Fiction Gothic Fiction is a literary field which emerged in the late 18th century. When it comes to defining its genesis, a precise point in time can hardly be given. Depending on the definition of what Gothic Fiction is, several literary periods bear elements of Gothic – from ancient prose to Shakespearean works, from post-medieval to post-Renaissance. However, the most defined pe... ...extinguished, Jane and Mr. Rochester are able to spend their lives together and to restore peace. She was both a symbol and the reason herself for the burdens which especially Mr. Rochester carried during his life. Without her having died there would have been no way for Jane and Rochester to lead a prosperous consolidated life. Conclusion Jane Eyre indeed is a Gothic novel which shares a great deal of characteristics with the most famous Gothics. Still, its content and reason are beyond surreal factors. It incorporates mysteries and myths and some veritable supernatural happenings. Especially the real, psychological and social origins of the character's fears are the root of emotions and fears haunting the characters. Jane Eyre is a perfect sample for the challenges one has to face in life and the way they obsess one's thoughts and limit the ability to proceed.

Consumerism Causes Unhappiness Essay -- Cause and Effect Essays

Theresa H., a woman in Massachusetts was, inarguably, strapped. She had lost her $18,000-a-year job several months earlier, and her live-in boyfriend didn't earn much. Health insurance for her and her daughters was out of reach: "I just punt and hope we're healthy," she said. And yet, in her apartment, were the trappings of upper-middle-class comfort. The big-screen TV and VCR. The crush of name-brand toys. And outside, the fairly new Lincoln Town Car--for which she was several months behind on payments. The tableau was at once absurd and sad--but not altogether surprising. We are, after all, a nation of accomplished spenders, slaves to advertising and status symbolism. The conspicuous fruits of our consumption shout out our aspirations and insecurities. This is the phenomenon Juliet Schor explores in The Overspent American. Schor, a University economist, has delivered what amounts to a sequel to her breakthrough 1992 study, The Overworked American. That book, justifiably embraced as gospel by the human-resources intelligentsia, expertly documented the time squeeze faced by two-income families as hours on the job expanded. Americans' leisure time, Schor demonstrated, was vanishing. Why are we killing ourselves this way? In large part, Schor argues now, we work so that we might spend. Americans are engaged in an intensifying "national shopping spree" rooted in competitive emulation--keeping up with the Joneses on a manic scale. "We are impoverishing ourselves," she writes, "in pursuit of a consumption goal that is inherently unachievable." Corrosive consumerism, of course, has existed as long as envy and avarice. Look at the pharaohs' pyramids. And much of Schor's evidence of its current manifestation will seem bl... ...lator." Much of our spending clearly is unnecessary or wasteful, raising troubling moral questions. Moreover, the uphill pursuit of material nirvana is stressing us out. Amid widespread wealth, most Americans aren't content with their lives. Is that such a terrible thing? I'm ambivalent. Ambition, dissatisfaction with the status quo, a desire to improve our lots and those of our children--these are profoundly American, if not universal, traits. They have driven us to stunning accomplishments and global leadership, and few would want the alternative of complacency and stasis. Yet we spend more than we should on Armani and OshKosh B'gosh, and it's making us crazy. Schor would have us on a middle path, one that retains the ardor but loses the insanity. Perhaps it's worth a try. Source Cited Schor, Juliet B. The Overspent American. Boston College Press, 2002.

Creon Antigone by Sophocles Essay

In Antigone, written by Sophocles, Creon dominates the play with his powerful yet arrogant personality. Even though Antigone is the name of this play, Creon, the ruling king of Thebes with a no turning back attitude, proves to be the main character. Creon rules over everyone but that does not stop the intelligent Antigone from protecting her brothers dead body. She gets caught in this illegal act by the very dynamic character of Creon. There are endless personality traits to describe Creon, but certain traits that pop out are his strength/power and his stubbornness. Who is the man here, she or I if this crime goes unpunished?(Scene 2, lines 82,83). This quote is a simple example of how stubborn a king with that much pride can act toward his own family. We then learn that no matter how wrong he is in his decisions, he still sticks with what he believes to be the right punishment to Antigone. The other proving quote in Scene 3 (line 26) is when Creon states, Do you want me to show myself before the people? Or to break my sworn word? No, and I will not. Creon slowly starts to realize the right thing to do in his situation but something inside of him prevents him from saving Antigone. It could quite possibly be him knowing his own strength and power compared to everyone else. His strength plays a key role in the problems that occurred. Antigone sees right through this personality trait of his. Creon is not strong enough to stand in my way.(Prologue, line 35) Also,in Scene 1 line 118 Creon says,Theres nothing in this world that is more demoralizing than money. Creon really means it when he says this. He thinks that everything in the world has a price. His strength can be translated as a waste cause he doesnt use his powers for the better of the city of Thebes. His power completely forces him to believe that no one is above him. That is where the conflict began for Antigone and Polyneices. There was not much motivation for his actions besides his pride, which is apparently the cause of all their troubles. If Creon would have realized early on that the right thing to do is more important then power and pride, Antigone would not have of been dead. In Scene 2, (line 75,76) Choragus is right on when he says, Like father, like daughter both headstrong, deaf to  reason. Creon believes that his word over all should be the final say. But when Antigone, a female at that, defies him, he flips out and sentences her to rot in a prison cell. In his mind, he was rational with the choices he made. When it comes down to it, Creon was just trying to represent the position of the king. Unfortunately, his greed overcame his responsibility of the throne. His power against everyone else in Thebes proved to be significant when he sentenced Antigone. After the events that happened, he was still so stubborn to turn back. At the very end of this play, Creon finally realized his wrong doings and he said, I was the fool, not you. And you died for me.(Scene 5, line 92) Both his stubbornness and his power broke down and we saw the real Creon. Characters like this in Greek literature are important because the form the plot, the conflict, and the resolution. Without the Creons in plays, there would not be any tragedy or any thing to resolve at the end.

The Secret Life of Bees – Hero’s Journey Essay

Kc Keppler January 13, 2012 Block D – English Lily’s Journey Towards Self Discovery and Maturity – Bees In the novel, The Secret Life of Bees written by Sue Monk Kidd, there is one particular motif that one might call ‘all important,’ this motif is the bees that fit into Lily Melissa Owen’s, the main character and protagonist of books, heroic journey towards self discovery and finding a way to open up to others. The bees in this story represented and lead her, piece by piece, to her finding herself and accepting the imperfections in her life. The book is initially set in Sylvan, South Carolina where Lily was born and raised by her father and mother before her mother’s untimely death. But the setting quickly changes to Tiburon, South Carolina when bees that Lily had kept in a jar give her a call to her journey when she glanced over at the open jar – representing her own freedom as well as the bees. The sign of the bees departure fro m her holding them captive gave Lily a sense that someone was speaking to her only to help her understand the â€Å"her jar is open. † This sets off her journey to save her wrongly accused housekeeper from jail cell and runaway to Tiburon in search for information on her mother. This event immediately shows an initial step forward in Lily’s search for self-discovery. Although the bees give Lily her call to journey they help her in several ways that bring her to happiness, acting as almost a subtle guide to her.The initial steps Lily takes with the bees’ help are in the first few chapters but after her call to journey, her prized possession, a picture of her mother with the word ‘Tiburon’ on the back and a picture of a black Mary are what leads Lily to a lake right by Tiburon, South Carolina. The honey label brings Lily to a bright pink house owned by the Boatwrights, a group of black sisters called the calendar sisters, August, June, and May, who li ve together and make a living off of honey. Lily is welcomed to stay and work on the Boatwright land for a while as she states that she is on her way to her aunt Bernie’s in Virginia. One her earliest moments while in the house that the bees help her forward is when Lily is just starting out in the black household and August asks her what she love most in the world. Immediately August, one of the calendar sisters and guardians of Lily in the story, is portrayed as a symbol for Lily’s exploration of new things and urging Lily to think of something she truly loves and to discrver a aspect of herself is one of the challenges that she, as a young woman, has not yet faced.Lily happens to list multiple things but the bees are among the highest on the list. This is because in Lily’s story the bees mean her personal growth as a human and exploration into new things, staying as a beekeeper in the Boatwright house is just one of those explorations that she undergoes along this journey. While in the house the writer begins to create Lily an infatuation with an older boy named Zachary Taylor, or for these purposes, Zach. But the feelings aren’t one sided as Zach, the African American, 16 year old boy begins to grow feelings for Lily too. Zach almost acts as a guardian but he also takes some of the part of the bees as from early on he attempts to nudge Lily to be more open about herself but her lack of confidence in herself and the people that care for her initially keeps her fairly timid about helping people to better understand her.Although Zach makes attempts to guide Lily and help her mature and grow as a person it is the bees that lead her to another step in sexual maturity when she informs Zach of her feeling towards him after licking the honey off his finger. This showed Lily moving forward in her emotional and sexual maturity as a young woman and understanding new aspects of what she can feel. These three occasions are few of many check po int in the book that the bees help Lily and one way or other to begin understand her actions and why she feels the things she does.By the end of the book she shows a fully mature side of her when she manages to come to terms with the fact that her mother had left them before she died and wasn’t perfect as she had suspected for the majority of the story. Learning these things about her mother took courage on her behalf but without the bees couldn’t have happened. August acts as a mentor and guardian and a conversation speaks to her telling her, â€Å"Most people don’t have any idea about all the complicated life going on inside a hive. Bees have a secret life we don’t know anything about. This helps Lily to identify with the lives of the working bees. The bees are said to have a way of continuing to work hard and have a strong love for their mother (the queen of the hive) much like Lily. Of course the bees have a strong hold on a female community somethin g that Lily thrives on in the Boatwright and benefits from, this shows Lily the true power that and community can have when working together. But most of all, through everything, the bees always manage to inspire her to do something or understand another thing.By the end of story Lily chooses not to return home but to remain in the Boatwright house but when speaking to her father finds a way to mature and almost forgive him for his imperfections as a person, there is in no way that she would have found a way to take a step forward like this without the guidance of the bees on her journey. They help understand why things have happened to her and hold a very important place not only in the novel but in Lily’s heart too.Because the bees are the true inspiration of the story as told by the title, they assume the position of the main point of all the motifs that guide Lily through her journey. Everyone is like Lily, in that aspect of wanting to find him or her, and reading this bo ok we learn that in order to find yourself you need one thing to inspire you and help you push forward. Finding our own bees in our life is a journey that will make out to help us discover ourselves just as Lily did.

Action Centred Leadership

John Adair – Action-centred Leadership John Adair (b. 1934) is one of Britain's foremost authorities on leadership in organisations. Before Adair and arguably still today people associated leadership with the so called ‘Great Man Theory'. One charismatic individual who used his or her personal power and rhetoric to mobilise a group. Adair approached leadership from a more practical and simple angle; by describing what leaders have to do and the actions they need to take. His model was figuratively based on three overlapping circles representing:- 1.Achieve the task. 2. Build and maintain the team. 3. Develop the individual. This creates a clear distinction between leadership and management. Creating charismatic ‘Great Man' leaders is difficult and cannot be relied on. You cannot guarantee that such a person can be developed and, once developed, that they will be reliable. Adair's theory is more practical and shows that leadership can be taught and that it is a tran sferable skill. The three circles in Adair's model overlap because:- 1. The task needs a team because one person alone cannot accomplish it. 2.If the team needs are not met the task will suffer and the individuals will not be satisfied. 3. If the individual needs are not met the team will suffer and performance of the task will be impaired. Leadership Functions Adair lists eight Leadership Functions required to achieve success. These need to be constantly developed and honed to ensure success. 1. Defining the task: Using SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-Constrained) to set a clear objective. 2. Planning: An open minded, positive and creative search for alternatives. Contingencies should be planned for and plans should be tested. . Briefing: Team briefings by the leader are a basic function and essential in order to create the right atmosphere, foster teamwork and motivate each individual. 4. Controlling: Leaders need self-control, good control system s in place and effective delegation and monitoring skills in order to get maximum results from minimum resources. 5. Evaluating: Assess consequences, evaluate performance, appraise and train individuals. 6. Motivating: Adair identifies eight basic rules for motivating people* in his book Effective Motivation (Guildford: Talbot Adair Press, 1987).Adair also created the 50:50 rule which states that 50% of motivation comes from within a person and 50% from his or her environment and particularly the leadership they encounter. 7. Organising: Good leaders need to be able to organise themselves, their team and their organisation. 8. Setting an example: The best leaders naturally set a good example. If effort needs to be made it will slip and a bad example is noticed more than a good example. Motivating Your Team The eight rules for motivating people:- 1. Be motivated yourself. 2. Select motivated people. . Treat each person as an individual. 4. Set realistic but challenging targets. 5. Un derstand that progress itself motivates. 6. Create a motivating environment. 7. Provide relevant rewards. 8. Recognise success. John Adair's work is in line with motivational theorists such as Maslow, McGregor and Herzberg. He emphasises the need for development of the team and team building. This can be achieved through team building events and using theories such as that of Belbin. Where Adair identifies the need, Belbin provides one of the tools.

Marketing Strategy of Beeline Essay

INTRODUCTION GTEL Corporation and VimpelCom penetrated in Vietnamese telecommunication market in 8th July 2008 under the brand name Beeline VN to provide GSM/EDGE voice and data services to cover all Vietnam with over 86million people. Until now, Beeline wants to select more strategies in order to achieve their objective which is growing their market share to 30% like the three giants: Mobilephone, Vinaphone and Viettel. From the last study, IBD strategic counseling center have identified and analyzed Beeline’s strategy as well as the position of the company in Vietnamese market. Furthermore, some suggestions for improving were also given. This report, hence, will evaluate every possible strategy for Beeline in many aspects as well as propose a  plan for the most appropriate future strategies. MAJOR FINDINGS I. Possible alternative strategies for Beeline 1. Identify possible strategies. According to the last study, Beeline’s position in the BCG matrix is question mark due to the high growth rate of the industry while the market share of Beeline is relatively low (only 4%). Moreover, in the product life cycle, Beeline has launched and introduced their services not for long. As a result, for three others stages in the product life cycle (growth, mature and decline), Beeline can implement most of the substantive growth, limited growth and retrenchment strategies. In order to identify those strategies, the most effective tool is Space matrix. Figure 1. BCG matrix Figure 2. Product life cycle a. Environmental stability By using the information from the external environment, we can identify as well as score the options in this factor. First of all, telecommunication market in Vietnam especially mobile network services has recently rocketed significantly. From the limited network until now, most of the places in Vietnam are coverage by applying many new technologies and liquidate the outdated one (GSM/EDGE, IP utilizing the NGN technology with frequency band of 1800MHz) so as Beeline will not be lagged behind by the three giants. Secondly, according to many economists, the inflation rate of Vietnam is still a double digit (14%) and it is considered as really high compared to other developing country (in 1 digit). Now, the Vietnamese government is using ceiling and floor price as well as tariffs to modulate the inflation rate back to one digit. Furthermore, at the beginning, Beeline launched the most extraordinary cheap services (Big zero) to market while other three giants’ price is much higher than Beeline. Therefore, the price range of Beeline with the average price of the industry is really high. Nevertheless, the last thing belongs to the environmental stability is barrier to entry into the market. From the political factor in the previous study, Vietnamese government is encouraging investments from oversea to increase the FDI  (Foreign direct investment), so that the tariffs and policy are absolutely motivating every foreign business like Beeline. Moreover, telecommunication is the most vital service in the modern world and this is also an industry which gains the most attention from the politician. As a result, besides high initial investment, the barrier to entry of this industry can be scored 4. b. Financial strength Financial strength is a strong point of Beeline. According to the annual report of Beeline, the return on investment rate of Beeline remains in 4.2%for each billion of dollars invested after payback. Besides, the profitability ratio of Beeline always stands above 50% (50.4%) and nearly equal to Mobilephone (53%). In another aspect, Beeline has 16years of history in the telecommunication market which means Beeline has experience in the current market. Until now, Beeline has provided 86 million mobile subscribers in total and it is till increasing while the price of services become cheaper and cheaper. Thus, they are able to have a large economy of scale. If there is a potential plan, Beeline will not hesitate to invest because they have the capital required for most of the plan by extracting a part in the total revenue of $2.27 and from the huge capital of Beeline. In the future, Beeline can maintain this strength to obtain their objectives especially updating new technology. c. Industry strength In this aspect, we can concern on three main factors: Financial stability, resource utilization and capital intensity. Firstly, the demand of using telecommunication services is always stable in most of the time, so that the revenue and financial status of this industry will always in a stable position. In the modern world, telecommunication is no longer a demand but a need of every citizen in the world. Thus, 6 will be the score for this option. On the other hand, the utilization of resources can also be taken full advantages by every business not only capital but also human resources (think global, act local). For instance, Beeline hired a professional force from both oversea (Mr. Alexey Blyumin, CEO) and Vietnam (Mr. Nguyen The Binh, Deputy CEO) to administrate the company in Vietnamese market. From the professional force, they will propose the best way of utilizing the financial resource in the most economical way. Last but not least, Beeline  is a foreign group with a huge amount of capital available. Consequently, the capital intensity of Beeline deserves to receive the highest score. d. Competitive advantage As aforementioned, Beeline has the capacity of providing services for more than 86 million people which is equal to the population of Vietnam while other three giants are in the process of signal coverage for the whole country. For Beeline, this objective will be obtained more easily than competitors (5years while others may take 10 years). From the statistic above, Beeline market share at the moment remain in 4% which is not high compared to the three giants. However, the service of Beeline quality is quite acceptable according to the opinion of the students who are the target customers of Beeline. Moreover, the time for Beeline to launch a new service is quite short (about 3 months) whereas Viettel or Mobilephone takes 6 months or a whole year to release a new service (3G). To sum up, the whole information and analysis will be shown in the table below to identify the position of Beeline in Space matrix. Diagram 1. Space matrix of Beeline When Beeline takes market penetration into consideration, they should invest more on PR and marketing campaign to create awareness and reputation in the public. Moreover, improving after sales service will help Beeline gain customer loyalty for repeat purchasing. For market development, Beeline may find some other potential market in Vietnam especially in the rural areas but the living standard of the citizens at that place is at medium level (Dien Bien, Sapa, Tam Dao, etc). This strategy can be apply easily thanks to  the development of technology, so that Beeline just have to concern about human resource or others factors. However, Beeline still have to use other strategies as well at the rural area to compete with Viettel who have coverage most of the places in Vietnam. Next, product development strategy is about focusing on R&D. Beeline needs to create the new product line or add more value to the services like packaging, online counseling, etc. However, no matter what they do, they have to assemble to maintain their corporate image, their style (black and yellow) during the campaign. Finally, diversification will be the last secret weapon in the aggressive strategies. Specifically, Beeline can use forward , backward integration and horizontal integration like building more agencies throughout Vietnam or even providing mobile phone and internet, wireless, etc with the attractive price like Viettel sell Iphone 3, internet network Dcom 3G. Invest more on new technology| v| v| x| x| 13| 3rd | Table 3. Ranking and scoring From the table, it is noticeably that there are some tactics have the same score. Thus, it is depend on the manage board to decide which activities should do first or they need to have a strategic allocation of capital to do these activities simultaneously (find the critical path). If Beeline allocates the resource as well as schedule in the most effective way, they will not only minimize but also increase their profit and market share. The first thing they have to do is all about people. Hiring the right people is the most important for all business because it is the people who create the product, seek for customer and bring back profit for the company. This activity will lead to a good result of other activities of Beeline. That’s why, they hired a professional Vietnamese person to be the vice deputy of Beeline. It is obviously that when you do nothing, you gain nothing but sometimes during the economist crisis, do nothing is a good strategy unless the cost of doing nothing lower than making a new plan. II. Strategic plan of the most appropriate strategies for Beeline 1. Select the final strategies: At the end of the day, after analyzed and evaluated every available strategy, IBD agency will propose Beeline to apply market penetration and product development. Others strategies like market development or diversification are slightly risky according to some internal stakeholders. Moreover, the three giants have successfully applied market development and if Beeline do so, it is really hard to compete because even Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City which are the most potential market of Vietnam, Beeline have to endeavor to survive. For diversification, this kind of services play a role as a contributor only and most of the telecommunication company create their own supply, so that Beeline could hardly to do so. Making a new product seems to  be hard for Beeline because they have to maintain their style and corporate image. Thus, just do what you are best. At the moment, there are some strategies which is work for Beeline like Cost leadership or differentiation (for different services). However, when Beeline success like Viettel, cost leadership will not necessary like Viettel in the past, they launch out many cheap services but now it rarely has new promotion. 2. Strategic plan Implementation is most difficult part which every company faces. Making a plan is easy but when they implement it, they will face many unexpected problem like physical risks (an manager may got an accident, etc) or business risks, financial risks, natural risks, etc. As a result, there need to be a detail plan and closely control system. This plan will be taken charged by the management board as well as every departments of the company. a. Management board Management board is the head of the company, so that Beeline needs to hire a professional person to take charge this position. First of all, the senior manager have to make a clear vision and mission as well as objectives for every department to explain deeply for them to work in the right direction. This is called envisioning. Apart from that, controlling and encouraging will ensure every department especially Marketing and Financial Department support each other and the manager also have to support them not only for professional issues but also ratify their plan. By recognizing contribution with fair wages and salaries, Beeline’s manager will not only motivate them for increasing productivity but also gaining their respect. Last but not least, in order to implement well, Beeline need to apply both intended (deliberate) and emergent (realize) strategies because by doing so, they will not only have clear and reality mission from the information gather from functional department but other department also have a clear mind about their mission to implement the strategy. For the managers, by creating the responsibility charts will help Beeline manager have a clear and logistic plan. A clear objectives, sub-objectives, general program and make an assumption will set a mile stone for the employees to achieve and also make a competitive environment when the manager utilize with his/her motivation program. b. Departments Working as a team is not about in a inside but also among departments together. Marketing department will take charge of making plan to build reputation and promote the profit of Beeline. However, Beeline cannot use all of their money for advertising. This is the time for financial department, the CFO (Chief Financial Officer) will calculate the cost of advertising and ask the CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) to adjust the plan to match with the budget of the company. However, in order to have such a professional labor to do so, the Human resource department has to ask other department for their demanded labor. Base on that, the manager of HR department will seek and find the right person for that position especially the labor force for PR activities. There are others department which Beeline needs to concern but as a telecommunication provider, those three departments are the most important. c. Allocate resources As a contributor of mobile network, the human resource of Beeline need to be allocate most in the sales department while other professional one will place in the vital position (manager, team leaders). Moreover, Beeline also needs to contribute the services fairly between the southern and northern of Vietnam so as not face the overload problem in one territory. About financial issue, minimize expense by hiring the local people and maximize the profit because the local people know their customers best. Moreover, always checking the budget will help Beeline have a timely adjustment. All of the resource are available in the society both HR (in the society or university) and financial (bank, issuing share, etc). When Beeline become the one of the heavenly king of Vietnamese telecommunications market, they can have another network system to allocate the resource not only the urban areas but also the entire country. CONCLUSION This report has made a comprehensive evaluation of many strategies available for beeline. However, the most effective strategies which Beeline needs to take into consideration are market penetration and product development. Furthermore, not only the management board of Beeline must envision but also make sure every department support and working together as a team.
